Rimonabant and Weight Loss

We know that cannabis stimulates the appetite so why shouldn’t a type of anti-cannabis have opposite virtues?

We have heard a lot said lately about a medication which could save smokers who wish to give up smoking, but could also help with the obesity battle.

This new medication is known by it’s code SR141716A, (a Sanofi product) and could be commercialised under the name Acomplia* as soon as this year, 2006.

Rimonabant is an anorectic anti obesity drug, a CB1 cannabinoid receptor antagonist, a type of anti cannabis.

It has been evaluated by Pi Sunyer and other researchers and has been shown to be an efficient means to reduce weight as well as cardiovasculaire risks after a year’s usage on patients classified ‘obese’ on a weight loss programme taking some form of physical exercise.

Researchers have confirmed rimonabant brought about a considerable weight loss as well as the concentration of triglycerides (‘bad’ cholesterol) and a rise in ‘good’ cholesterols - HDLs.
