European GPs at a loss of how to deal with obesity epidemic

Whilst everyone is aware of the much publicised rising european obesity epidemic, at an obesity debate organised by UK company Medical Cutures, european GPs were heard to say that they do not know what to do about it.

"European trends in obesity are now in parallel with [those in] the United States," according to the president of the European Union of General Practitioners, Christian Fabian, also a GP in Sweden.

The debate was attended by a panel of obesity experts and delegates from the union.

The head of nutrition and health research at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, Susan Jebb said, "We have a small window of opportunity to do something to slow down this trend, especially in children, before it is too late."

According to european statistics, published in a press briefing at the debate, most European countries are showing the prevalence of adult obesity has risen by 10%-50% in recent years.
